Dorothy B. Barrett - Ralph's Wreck

Named in Memory of Ralph Sherry, whom suffered a stroke while on route to dive the wreck, this unidentified schooner may possibly be the Dorthy B Barrett.

Built in 1904 the Dorothy B Barrett was a five masted schooner. Sunk August 14, 1918 by U-117.  This picture was taken by Sewall Merritt, a native of South Portland, from a life boat off the coast of New Jersey. Merritt was 2nd Mate aboard the Dorothy B. Barrett when she was hit by the German submarine U-117, one of the most successful U-boats to patrol the American coast.U-117 was 267.5 feet long with a cruising speed of 14.7 knots on the surface and seven knots submerged. Its armament consisted of one deck gun, two mine tubes with a capacity to carry 42 mines, and four torpedo tubes. After departing Kiel, it set a course for North America to lay mines off the coast of the United States and to conduct undersea cruiser warfare.
