The wreckage at the site plotted is a likely match for the iron-hulled side-wheel steamship Champion. The wreck was long known as the "inshore paddlewheeler".Recent recovery of this luggage tag by the CM Explorer crew indicates it is highly likely this is the Champion. This paddle wheeler sunk on November 7, 1879, in collision with the schooner Lady Octavia. There was a loss of 28 passengers. This deep-water paddle-wheeler lies at 115 feet and is in an area with usually very clear water.
