San Gil

The San Gil sunk in 1942 after being torpedoed by the U-103. She is a 3000+ ton freighter built in Belfast, Ireland for the United States Fruit Company . The San Gil sits at 125 ft and her forward boiler room is reletively intact and the bridge wreckage lies upside down and is still produces the rare artifact.
Just before 7am on February 4, 1942, the unescorted and unarmed San Gil was hit on the port side in the engine room by one torpedo from U-103. The explosion killed two men on watch below, destroyed the port lifeboat and the radio equipment. At 07:.23 am, a second torpedoe struck amidships on the starboard side and caused the ship to sink in 5 minutes. The survivors had abandoned ship and were picked up by USS Nike (WPC 112) and brought into at Lewes, Delaware.
